As an Ottawa Wedding Photographer

let me be the first to tell you, these vows do not have to be read in a crowd unless you want to! You could say these with your partner privately (well, privately but in the presence of your photographer and videographer would be the best!) You can share your vows at your ceremony, usually, those vows are short and sweet, 1-2 minutes long. Or if you're the type of couple that are super private, writing letters to each other to read on the morning of your wedding is a sweet idea!

Give Yourself Time

Unless you work amazing under pressure, don't stress yourself out by writing your vows on the morning of your wedding. Instead, maybe find some pockets of time in the month leading up to your wedding. Set aside quality time to write out your thoughts and to get your genuine feelings about your partner out on paper!

Fun fact: my husband and I BOTH wrote ours the morning of, and because they were spontaneously written on lined paper, our handwritten vows were thrown out. Sooooo give yourself time and maybe buy a cute vow booklet.

Find Inspiration

Dig out that shoe box of old love letters and movie tickets, read through old emails. Maybe take a date night to the first place you met to rekindle some memories. Snuggle on the couch after playing video games or baking together and jot down all the lovey dovey feelings. Or let inspiration strike and just keep notes in your phone.

Be Authentic

Close ChatGPT, do NOT let AI write your vows, because if you didn't know AI will lack that certain je ne sais quoi and you will definitely sound like a robot reading your vows. "beep, boop, beep, bop, 01001001 00100000 01001100 01101111 01110110 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101." Write your vows from your heart!!

Choose Your Words Wisely!

While you want to be genuine and portray your emotions..... how we write has different nuances than how we talk, make sure your vows don't sound like a thesaurus threw up!

Practise, Practise, Practise!

Now, by no means do you have to memorize them if you don't want to, but at least be familiar with your vows! Find a trusted friend to read them in front of, read them in front of a mirror, video record yourself reading them and play them back.
